File name error in Word97

B

Barry Belanger

I work in a school system. Office 97 is installed on an XP
machine. The staff member told me the other day that in
Word she can only save file names one character in length.
When you hit "Save" or "Save As..." in a new document, it
picks out the first letter instead of the first few words,
as Word normally does. (The program has worked correctly
in the past.)

Any attempt to use more than one character crashes the
prog. There is no prob. with the rest of the MSOffice
Suite (Excel, etc...) I have uninstalled, used Eraser97,
re-installed, and absolutely no change.

Thanks

With Word closed, use Windows Explorer or My Computer to find the
WINWORD.EXE file on your hard drive. Right-click on winword.exe, then
left-click on Properties | Compatibility. If the "Run this program in
compatibility mode" box is checked, uncheck it.

It worked great! Thanks. Last detail: Word opens now with
Document5 instead of Document1. Not really a big problem,
but annoyingly wrong. Any help?
