File Name Length Limit ?

L

Larry Barnhill

Hello All,

In trying to publish a Web Page with Frontpage 2000, I am getting "File Name
too Long" errors, which abort the Publish operation. What is the file name
length limit and is it just the file name or the complete path name length?

Thank You for any insight to this problem.

256 characters. Applies to both individual file name and a path to a file.

The limit for a filename in FrontPage is that of the file system - example
255 characters for FAT32 running on Windows 98.

Your host may be imposing a filename length limit on their server. The
lowest limit I have seen imposed is 32 characters, including the file
extension.

There are limits to the length of a URL - FrontPage will not allow a
hyperlink longer than 250 characters, and some browsers will not allow more
than 255 characters to be typed into their address bars.

Thank You very much, Gentlemen. If I understand your answer correctly, the
256 character limit includes all characters in the absolute path, starting
with the drive letter and including all characters including the file
extension? I was afraid of this.

It may mean a complete restructuring of this site that I seem to have
inherited.

On a related note, when publishing a web page, must the Indexing service be
turned off? I attempted publishing this morning, but the first error was
"Server Error: cannot access ~\catalog.wci" or something similar.

Thank You for any input.

You should also be aware that some hosts limit file name lengths (excluding the path)
- usually on some Unix server and to 32 char max

Why would anyone want a file name 256 characters long, let alone 240?

256 is the operating system's limit, and I don't think this is a *Frontpage*
question.
