Does anyone know why files names can only be 32 characters in Office? Does
anyone know of any work around?
Yes - when MacBu was developing Office, they made a design decision
to use certain Carbon code that restricted file lengths to 32
characters. My guess is that the extended filename Carbon routines
were not stable when the code was locked down. Recall that half the
development cycle for Office v.X occurred prior to the release of
OSX as a production version (and there were quite a few changes
between OS X version 10.0 and version 10.1).
Extended filenames is a very frequently requested feature, and you
can be sure that MacBU is working to accommodate those requests.
As an easy workaround, save your files with <=32 chars, then rename
them in the Finder. You can then reopen the files in the application
- the filename appears truncated with garbage characters at the end
in the titlebar, but it will save the document back to the
long-named file.
