File needed to open the document can't be found

I have a user who attempts to open a word document by
double clicking on the document on his desktop bu he gets
the following error message.

....File needed to open the document can't be found...

However, if the user goes into the Word application then
attempts to open the document everything opens without an
issue.

Any ideas?
