file-new will not open a new file

The toolbar button or the file-open action opens an old word doc that I
created last month. It is labeled document1 in the title bar, if I try to
open another new file, same file opens and is document 2. I deleted the
normal.dot. Then I removed and re-installed office, still impossible to open
a new word doc. With this doc open, all the properties are listed as
"unknown". Office 2000 and XP

Normally, recreating your Normal template will correct this issue. You
indicated you did delete a Normal.dot but since it continues to occur, I'd
say you didn't find the right one. :)

Go to Tools/Options/File Locations and note the location for your User
Templates folder. That's where you should find the Normal template Word uses
for creating new blank documents.
