file not available message

I received a word file as an attachment and get the message "File ... not
available" when I try to open it. The file name it gives is not the same as
the file I opened. It appears that the file name becomes the first few
words in the file. I checked, and the file does exist and has 19,968 bytes
in it. I copied it to another file, and that worked fine. I cannot open
the copied file either. I am using office 2002 installed the word 2003
viewer as well as the file format converters files from the microsoft site.
When I try to open the file whe the word 2003 reader I get the same message.
When I try to open the file in wordpad, I get the message "This page uses
frames, but your browser doesn't support them.". When I open it in notepad,
the only ascii characters I see are at the bottom, and they say "Microsoft
Office Word Document
MSWordDoc Word.Document.8 "

It appears that the file has become corrupted, and copying the file simply
replicates the corruption.

Have you tried using Word's "Recover text from any file" option? I would be
surprised if it yielded any useful text, but it's worth a try.

Another thing to try would be Word 2003's Open and Repair option
(although... you don't appear to have Word 2003, and I don't know if that
option--available from the Open button's dropdown arrow in the Open dialog
box--was available in Word 2002.
