File not available when opening docs created in word xp

Using Word 2003 when I try to documents created in word
xp or word 2000 i receive "file is not available"

When you try to do what? Open them? Exactly which steps are
you using to perform the action? Where are these documents:
on your local drive, on a network, in the Internet?
