File Not Found Error - US Doc on a UK system

Jerry Pacemaker

Hi everbody.

I am based in the U.S. creating Microsoft Word documents for delivery to a
client in the UK. Problem is that they cannot open them in the UK office. I
have Office XP (Microsoft Word 2002 (10.6612.6714) SP3). They have Office
2000 (Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1)

The error received when double clicking on the file, or opening through the
diolog box is

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.
(M:\Private\Translations\...\etc)

Here's what I have done so far:

-Created a document saved without Smart Tags - no success
-Created a document saved with features disabled after Word 97 - no success.

I am wondering if this is an encryption issue with the 128 vs 56 systems.
Even though the document is not password protected nor ever has been?

Any other suggestions? Any other tests I should be sending them. Of course
we are using RTF for now, but as this is a long term project I would like to
get this solved, as RTF will end up using a lot of space. The support on the
MS site seems only to point to encryption issues if the doc is password
protected or ever has been.

Thanks a bunch
Shane

If they have Norton Anti Virus, tell them to disable the Office plug-in
option.

They are using McAfee (sp?) from what I can see from the screenshot - worth
a try.....thanks Terry.

I don't think it will be the 56/128-bit encryption unless the UK users are
still using Windows 2000 with IE4 or earlier and have never installed any
updates (doesn't seem likely!).

The most likely problem is that the document is being corrupted during
transmission. One of the best ways to avoid corruption during transmission
is to ZIP the document before attaching it to the email using WinZip or
similar utility. You're welcome to test sending a document to my email
address for testing if you wish. Just copy and paste the email address into
the To box: the address will work as it is.
