File, Open applet not work after latest WinXP update

R

reedb

Using file drop down menu then Open gives applet that hangs Word 2003 (with
all updates installed) as soon as any folder is double clicked (also hangs
when folder clicked once and the open button clicked).
If window explorer is used to locate file, then right click on file icon,
then click Open; the file will open and can be used/edited. Once a file is
opened Word seems to work okay.
This behavior occurred immediately after install of latest set of WinXP
security updates installed via update manager. Word worked okay immediately
before required restart for XP updates. Have restarted twice since XP updates
install and problem remains. No updates to Word installed during this problem
sequence.
How do I repair this?

See: You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

If you aren't comfortable with editing the Windows registry yourself, then
go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to Item
No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix". Download and run
the script to automatically modify your registry as described in KB918165.
You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program in order to run
the script.

A revised version of the update is supposed to be released on Tuesday, April
25, to fix these problems.
