each time i try to open a file the dialog box appears but i am unable to select a file ...the program hangs and displays not responding..be it outlook, word, frontpage

Hi Atin,
You didn't mention the version of Office or Windows you're using.
You may want to try using Start=>Search/Find and delete the files
you find with file name string *.do*;~$*.*
(close Office apps first) then try starting one of the Office apps.
That will cleanup some left over temporary files.
If Office XP/2002 or higher, you can also try the Office safe mode
after that (hold ctrl key when starting Word) to see if that works.
If so, you may have a conflict between Word and another program.
