file open hangs word 2000 in windows xp

can't use file open in either word or excel 2000. i can double click
on the file in a folder and the file will open ok.
i have searched but found nothing specific that helps.

I'm having a similar problem in word and access 2003.

It happens when I click on the top-level pull-down menu on the "Open"
file dialog.

I'm running with XP Pro SP2.

When the firewall is ON (Norton firewall enabled, XP-SP2 firewall
disabled) the program hangs forever - can't even use the Task Manager
to end it...

When the firewall is OFF (Norton firewall disabled, XP-SP2 firewall
disabled) the programs hang for 30-45 seconds before showing the
pull-down menu.

This is an out-of-the-box new computer, with an out-of-the-box new
Office 2003 SP1. I have a RAID level 1 hard disk array, but everything
else is pretty standard. All my other programs seem to work fine.

this is on a company computer. 150 other computers with similar
configuration. my computer is the only one with the problem. i can't
uninstall or reinstall. i can't install the sp3.
any suggestions?
