Do you mean opening the file in normal mode rather than in slide show?
If the file is in .pps (PowerPoint show) format, slide show will be started
immediately when you open.
The workaround will be to change the extension from .pps to .ppt.
Alternately, open PowerPoint. Click File > Open.
Select the file and click OK.
Re-save it as Presentation (.ppt).
On a further note, if you only have PowerPoint viewer, you can only view the
file in slideshow. You will not be able to edit the file. Hope it helps.
