file open menu very slow to open

With frequency (but not 100% of the time) when I do a File>Open, it takes
more than a minute for the dialog box to come up. Windows Explorer and
other programs show a list of all the files in this directory quickly
(although there are a lot of files: 2.2 GB in the folder and its subfolders.
the subfolders maybe have half this). Is this a known problem with Word?
Is there something I've got wrong? Can I fix this?

It may be because you have large folders but it is more often because there
is a dead or inaccessible drive mapping. If you have large folders, make
sure that in Windows Indexing is enabled or the first time you open File,
Open/SaveAs in each session, all the files have to be indexed.
