File permission error when saving to hard disk

I'm having some trouble with Word 2007 when saving changes (as Word
97-2003)in the documents to my hard disk (i.e. *not* a USB). Quite often
(though not always) I get a file permission error and I'm asked to retry.
When I hit "yes" to retry, the "save as" dialog window opens, I have to
choose the Word 97-2003 option.

I'm aware that this error message comes up when trying to save changes on a
USB device, but I'm saving straight onto my hard disk.

What can I do to prevent this?
