File Permissions Error messages (RPC patch issue?)

About 3 weeks ago I ran a massive campaign of Windows Updates on all our
workstations (about 120). Since then I have run into some network drive
errors. My file server runs Windows 2000 (all SP's and updates current) in a
Windows NT domain (no AD). The problem can occur when editing an existing
document or while saving a new document on a network share. The documents
involved are mostly Microsoft Word. Here is what happens:

While saving or closing a document on a network share the user gets an error
message that states "unable to save document. File permissions error."

The only way I have found to solve the problem is for the user to log off
then back on to the network. The problem so far seems to be on Windows 95
and 98 workstations only, but I'm not completely sure. When the problem
occurs the users are still able to browse the network shares and open
documents, but can't save ANY documents. Rebooting the server had no affect.
No updates were made on the server just prior to this starting. Could this
be an RPC patch issue?

Does anyone have any suggestions where to look?
