File, Print from Microsoft Photo Editor Not Working
Symptom = when you do File, Print in Microsoft Photo Editor it blows up
to a null dialog box.
Lots of postings on the Internet about this with few replies or usable
suggestions. I have one workaround and one fix:
The workaround = temporarily change default printer to the one you want
and just hit the printer icon from photoeditor. It will print OK to the
default printer. Just avoid File, Print.
The fix. I extrapolated from other users that long printer names are
the cause or catalyst. In Win 9x you can just F2 and change the printer
name as I recall.
So this is a fix for Windows 2000 but any way to change the printer
name should work.
Changing Printer name in Windows 2000
1. Run Regedit and go to
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Window
s NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers
2. Change the "name" key (in the right pane) for each printer to
something shorter. I don't know how short but I suspect 15 characters.
3. Stop & Start the Print Spooler to put the change into effect (or
reboot) and <F5> to refresh the "Printers" list and you'll see the new
names. Photo editor will then do file, print immediately.
So many people posted "1 message" questions about this that no one ever
answered, and either MS doesn't want to acknowledge or fix it or their
KB search engine stinks, or both.
While on the topic of Photo Editor SNAFUs, if it won't restore and
loads (and stays) minimized in the system tray, right click on it in
the task bar and select Maximize. Eventually it will screw up again but
this purges the problem for a while.
I get the impression that Photo Editor was acquired or developed by <10
people in a basement somewhere and then bolted onto office with the
least effort and testing possible. It is a cool program though.
Happy computing.
