File Properties

I'm trying to find where file properties (like Author, etc.) is kept in the
file. I need to scrape this information out of the files WITHOUT using
something like DSOFile.dll. I'm really just trying to find out WHERE this
information is kept. Any documentation on this would be helpful. I need
this for WORD documents, and eventually I need to find it for .pdf files as
well.
