file protection messes up page numbers

Hi

I'm using Word 97 and my document has page numbers which have been
inserted in the footer using the Insert Page Numbers option.

The problem is that when I protect the document, the page numbers mess
up. Instead of being 1,2,3... etc, they become 3,3,3...

Can anyone explain why this happens and how I overcome it?

Thanks

Hi Madge,

This is a bug in Word 97, and whether it's possible to do anything about
it depends a lot on the printer driver you use.

You can try
- toggling the following in Tools/Options/Print, in various
combination: "update field codes", "background printing", "reverse order"
- going into and out of print preview until the numbering is correct,
then printing
- printing only in unprotected mode ("update fields" should then be
turned off)
- using a macro to update the fields, then print
I'm using Word 97 and my document has page numbers which have been
inserted in the footer using the Insert Page Numbers option.

The problem is that when I protect the document, the page numbers mess
up. Instead of being 1,2,3... etc, they become 3,3,3...

Can anyone explain why this happens and how I overcome it?
