File reservation problems

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
File Association needs to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

No it's not that!

This happens opening files in Excel or Word by opening from Explorer and
from within the programs

If it happens when using File/Open then are the files stored on the
network? If so then you may be encountering a permissions issue.

There are several KB articles that cover permissions needed for
Office, however we need to know what version of Office you are using
and your network os. Or you can search the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Beth,

thanks for replying to this. My customer is using a windows98 client PC,
Office2000 accessing files from a Windows2000Pro PC being used to share
files. His files are protected so that only he can open them (he's the MD).
I've protected his folder by selecting just his user login to access it. His
brother the Marketing Director is setup in a similar way but does not seem
to have the same problems. What confuses me is that the problems occurs at
first startup, then he reboots the PC every day after initial startup any
the problem clears!!?!

Hi Andreas,

It does sound like a network issue, rather than an Office or
permissions issue. I suspect it has something to do with his
authentication on the network and unfortunately that's an area I'm not
comfortable in diagnosing - sorry!

Perhaps one of the network experts in this group will have a
suggestion now that we have some additional details.

Hi Andreas,

Do a search for *.tmp;~$*.* files on the folders
he has access to. If Word can't delete temp files
it creates it will continue to think the file is
still in use. You can also get this with some
antivirus software that keeps track of files that
are open and doesn't let go of that information when
the app has already closes it.

Also be sure that Office 2000 is current through
http://officeupdate.com if it's installed from a CD.

Hi Bob,

I have already gone down this route it's not Temp files causing this
problem.

Any file is effected even if it has not been opened for donkey's years.
