File Save As function very slow

When I try to save a file in
Outlook, Word, Excel, ..., in an XP system, the dialog box
that appears that allows you to select your drive and/or
folder takes a loooong time (i.e., 20 seconds) to respond and populate
the drop down box. Is there any setting that users can change to speed it up?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, left-click on
Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped drives that are not
currently available.

We have two machines (xp with office 2003), using all office sw (and only
office), they can sometimes be very slow when using save as, insert or other
[external?] functions. This does not happen while working on the document
itself. When "saving as" each stage of the path can take a couple of minutes
to open. This can be for local or network locations. Initial thoughts are
path issues to locations.

Any help greatly appreciated (wasting a lot of time here...).
If not objected I will also post this as its own thread.
