I saw this happen yesterday, in PC Word 2007. I have no idea what caused
it, other than the user was using tracked changes on a large document, and
had replaced almost everything in the document -- several times.
I have tried to persuade him not to accumulate more than one "set" of
tracked changes in a document, and to resolve all changes between each
version, and NOT to hide the changes while he's working. But he won't be
told, so I am surprised he gets any documents at all
In Word 2008, go into your Preferences. In "Save" make sure you have
"Always create backup" turned ON. That forces Word to save a clean copy of
your file every time you manually save, which will prevent the problem you
have now.
When editing large documents, don't HIDE things. Otherwise, you get edits
on top of edits, and if you are tracking changes problems are certain.
Preferably, don't use Track Changes at all. If you must, don't hide them,
and keep your paragraph marks visible.
If you work on a document for more than a day, begin each morning by saving
a new version as a new file. That way, the worst it can get is that you
lose one day's work
Hope this helps
The file appears alone in the recent list. I did a search of the disk, but the
only version of this document, which is the only modified document since
January 28th, is the file that appears. Is it possible to have auto saved to a
different location? I don't believe there is a "new" version of this document
as I saved it with the same file name and path each time.
I'm really concerned about the prompts before I restarted. It prompted me to
save seven or eight times before it finally closed. I hit save each time, but
I'm not sure what happened.
Is there a way to revert to an old file, or maybe uninstall an update?
