file saving / older version access ?

am sorry if this question has been posed and answered already, i couldn't find it.

accidentally saved a revision of a file over the file itself. i am wondering if there is a way to retrieve the previous version of it ? other than the time machine, which was not set up when this happened.

Unfortunately this question has been asked numerous times & even more
unfortunately the answer is always the same. Sorry, but if you've closed the
file it is what it is. Had you realized before closing you could have used
Undo, but once you save & close the Undo stack is purged.

If you had enabled the Word Save preference "Always make backup" then yes,
the .bak file is right there in the same folder with the original and it
contains the previous version of the file.

If you have not switched that preference on, then it is as Bob said...
