FIle Saving

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I have a client that is saving (sharing) word files to a common folder on a windows XP computer. When the windows XP operator attempts to open the file it presents as hidden and archived. How does the user prevent this?

I cannot answer you question with authority, but I can report what happens when I try the same thing, which may be helpful, and may suggest a possible work-around until someone who actually knows gives you a better answer.

If I try to "Save" from Word across the network to a XP machine, I get an error saying "Word Cannot Save or Create this file. THe disk may be full or write protected...." And on the XP machine in the relevant shared folder this action creates a corresponding file that is empty.

However, if I save the file to my Mac, and move it across the network with Finder, I can open it without problem on the XP machine.

Don't know if this kludge will get your client able to access their files, but worth a try until you get a better answer.

All my software from Apple and MS is fully up-to-date. The Network is through a router I use for Internet access--I never tried to optimize it as a functional network but it works as described.

Correction: my Apple and Office 2008 software is all up-to-date. I am not fully up-to-date on the XP side.

A Mac saves two files per document; Windows should show you only one of
them.

Go into the options for Windows Explorer and turn off "Show hidden files",
then you will not see the "hidden" file, which is the resource fork.
Windows doesn't need it, and Word does not store anything in there, but the
Mac will always write it.

Cheers
