file sharing problem xp & 98se

I can open shared files on my network from my xp to my
98se computer. When I try to open the 98se shared files
on my xp computer the program hangs up (not responding)
so I ctrl+alt +del out of it and I lose all my desktop
except the wallpaper and I can't get anything back unless
I do a hard boot.
