File size bloat

Marc Hankin

I use a lot of References to bookmarks (e.g., {Ref
TableOfContents \* mergeformat}), and a lot of outline
styles in my Word documents, and a lot of references to
specific outline paragraphs.
I just saved the .doc version (which is 8,732kb) to
an .rtf version which is way smaller (319kb).
Why the difference in size? Is there anything I can
do to reduce the size of the .doc file, since I'm worred
that the file bloat will make the document unstable and
prone to corruption?

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers this.

Hi Marc,
Do you have any Userforms/Modules in the document?
If so you could try exporting them and importing into a new
template/Document. I think you'll notice a good change in size.

Normally the size of a document will increase the more you edit it (look
at your revision number). I don't really know what all this mess is but
I do know the above works for me (think it's to do with tracked changes
or background info held as a recovery option that didn't work very well
as originally written by Micro$haft). FYI it seems to work better in
2003 as I've saved docs in that originally created in 2000 and they have
reduced in size.
