File size increases dramatically when pasting pictures from Acroba

I work the Help Desk at a university and have a user that's experiencing
something I've never seen. The user states that he'll be working with an
existing Word document. He'll then open up a .pdf, copy some images or
pictures from it, and paste it into his Word document. The first problem is
that the text or image size will be too large. Secondly, the size of the
file increases dramatically. During a remote session, he showed me Word
documents that were 500MB in size!!! He said this was a result of copying
the images from a .pdf file. I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer some
insight into both of these problems. Thank you.
