File size increasing rapidly for no reason

Working on a document with a lot of embedded pictures,
around 7.5MB. Suddently started taking a long time to do
anything and now cannot open, notice it has just expanded
to over 80 MB, with one step inbetween to 45MB. Anyone
know what is going on?
