When we save the file with .csv format it take more space and with same data when file is saved with .xls or .xlsx format it takes very less space, any idea why this difference ?

csv files are basically text files and the 'newer' MS file types are
compressed ?
Though in my experience, there's very few ways to encode a file that
generates a *bigger* file than .xls (which AFAIK, is *not* a compressed
format).
