File size limit for Outlook 2003 personal folder

I recently upgraded a customer from Outlook XP to Outlook 2003. The main
reason for the upgrade was that his pst folder kept exceeding the 1.82
gigabyte limit in older versions of Outlook, while Outlook 2003 allows for up
to 33 terrabytes file size.
After the upgrade the properties for the pst folder shows that it is still
in the 97-2000 format, with the old size limit. I created a new 2003 pst
folder but it still won't allow me to close the old one or make the new one
the default. Any suggestions besides flatling the system and importing the
contents of the old outlook and archive folders?
Thanks.

I would try creating a new mail profile via the mail applet in the control
panel. Creating a new profile (don't copy any existing mail profile) should
give you control to create a new unicode style PST file. From there you
should be able to start Outlook and open the old PST file via File > Open.
