File size problem when images inserted

I'm sure this is an oldie but I can't find a definative solution in the MS
KB.

Whenever my friend inserts a jpg image (or any compressed image for that
matter), when he saves the document, the file size is enormously bloated and
it's clear that the file is being saved wth the image decompressed.

Like me, he's using Office 2000 and Win 98se. I don't have this problem
however and I'm not sure which setting is causing the problem.

Can anyone help?

1. Link rather than embed images so that they are not converted into
metafile equivalents.
2. Turn off fast-saves so that subsequent edits do not result in multiple
copies of the image being saved in the file.

As ever, should never take what friends tell you at face value. Turns out
he was resizing humongous images in Word rather than resizing them prior to
insertion, hence the bloated size.

Thanks anyway.

Cheers.

Ah yes, I've received 200MB PPT files with gloriously huge digital images
embedded.
