file size when placing Visio objects in Word

I created about 20 Visio diagrams in a Visio file of 0.5MB. When I copy/paste
them into Word so I can edit them as Visio objects, the Word file went from a
negligible size to nearly 11MB. This is all vector; no raster parts.
Obviously, this makes electronic distribution tedious. Any thoughts?

Instead of regular copy/paste, try copy/paste special--paste LINK. This
should eliminate some of the extra baggage in Word but not all of it.

If you use copy/paste, Word stores a copy of the Visio bits plus one or more
metafile renditions of the graphic for "presentation". If you use LINK,
Word only stores the "presentation" or the picture and not the Visio bits
(just the link information to the Visio bits). Downside of this is that if
you need to electronically distribute in order to have others EDIT, then
you'll have to send the original Visio file(s) that you linked to. If you
are distributing just for reading and not editing, then this will work well.

If you want to reduce the size of the Visio document, turn off the preview
or thumbnail feature.

Hope that helps!
