file types question

I have just loaded the Office 2007 package on my machine, but have retained
my old version of 2003. Now whenever I click on the 2003 file types (the
ones mising the "x" at the end of them) i.e. .doc .xls and .ppt. they open in
the 2007 version. I would like to open these only in the 2003 programs and
open only the new file extensions, which my colleges send me, i.e. .docx,
..xlsx, and .pptx, in the 2007 package.
I have tryed to correct the problem by going in the folder options and file
types tab and the setting the always open with program to the 2003 version.
The first issue here is that the 2003 programs no longer show up in the list.
When I search for the 2003 programs by browsing I can find them easily
enough and then click open but they still are not set as the defult. The
files still open in the 2007 package, when double clicked on. I think maybe
the problem lies in the fact that both of the executable files, one to open
2007 and one to open 2003 versions of software are named the same thing.
Maybe thats not the problem, I'm only guessing.

Anyone who can figure this out for me, I will tell them they are a genius
and I am their subordinate. Offering work arounds are not acceptable ;]
Thanks, Josh

The later version invariably takes presidence.
There are only workarounds, which you state are unacceptible

That is really disappointing.

Folder Options, Filetypes, pick the non-x type, And then the Change
button. Edit the entries to point to the Office 11 folder instead of 12.

Correction, "Advanced" button, NOT "Change" button.
