File:// versus Http://

When I connect a hyperlink to a page or graphic, FP2003 writes in the
address with the local file designation path (i.e. File://mydir/myfile How,
do I get it to default to my http://mywebsite.com/myfile path?

I didn't have this problem with earlier versions of FP, so I figured it's a
setting or something simple I'm doing either incorrectly or in the wrong
sequence.

Constantly retyping every link after setting up so it will reference the
webserver when I publish is getting tiresome.

Thanks.

Make sure that you always open a web/site and that all items have been
created or imported in the open web/site first be using or editing your
pages.

Always open your Web site first, and only then construct
hyperlinks. For example, choose Open Site from the File
menu, and then specify the folder or URL whre your site
resides.

Also, always add pages or pictures to your site first,
and only then add them to pages within that site. For
example:

1. Drag the file form Windows Explorer to the FrontPage
Folder list.
2. Drag the file from the FrontPage Folder list and drop
it on your Web page.

Then, what you're saying is that I'm updating my LIVE website directly. I
can understand why that would work.

What I have always done in the past was modify my site on my local pc and
then publish it to the servers where my site is hosted. But, I don't ever
remember having to type over the File//: paths to make them Http://. In
fact, I "know" I have never had to do that. I've been using FP for 6 or 7
years now. I am really puzzled why now it's become an issue.

I have also notice that if I change a folder name or file name the links are
not automatically updated throughout the site. Suddenly, FP is not my
friend anymore.

When working on a single page locally FP will always use file based link references
When working in a disc based web (DBW) Site, any page that has been opened and not saved will initially show file based links until
the page is saved the 1st time
If any of the links are outside of your currently open FP Site they will also show up as file based links
Note:
FP has always been happiest when your DBW root web is a top level folder on your drive w/o any spaces or punctuation (if it is not,
FP can tend to use file based links)

Thanks... but I guess I'm dense.

I'm using the same web directory structure for 7 years. I've only had this
problem since installing FP2003.

Is it not still possible to work on the local PC and publish it to my host
servers. I do not host my site myself. I can't even rename a page name
anymore and have FP automatically fix the links through my site. Used to,
it would prompt me that this page had links to it and would I like to update
them too. I don't even get those anymore.

How do I make the site a DBW site? I guess I'll go that route.
I think I understand that you're saying that I must always work directly in
the live version on the host servers--I can't design on my local PC and
publish it up. I guess.

If you open a FrontPage Web, then link one file in that Web to
another, FrontPage will generate a relative link such as
.../images/whatever.gif.

But if you open a single page (i.e. with File, Open) without opening a
FrontPage (File, Open Web), then FrontPage will generate file://
links.
That's because it has no point of reference (no start of a FrontPage
Web)
on which to build its links.

FrontPage will also generate file:// links when you link to a file on
your disk, but outside the current Web.
I have also notice that if I change a folder name or file name the links are
not automatically updated throughout the site. Suddenly, FP is not my
friend anymore.

This, too, is the usual behavior if you work on individual files
rather than opening a FrontPage Web.

Always use the File, Open Web command to open the folder that contains
your Web site, and only then start working with the files it contains.

I think I got it.

I was still having troubles. So, I created a new folder, saved it, and
basically recreated my work by carefully creating new pages, and simply
pasting the html content into the new pages. This worked.

Now, links are relative, and not file based.

I appreciate your help and sticking with me on this thread.
