File will not open - but Excel thinks it has opened it?

I open the file - it does not appear - just a new 'Book 1' page - but
according to Excel if I try to open it again this file is 'locked for
editing' by me - I have asked colleagues to check this is not just my PC
error and the same thing happens every time. Can someone suggest what could
be happening
