Excel 97 (MS Office 97)..., "File with the same name is already open." prompt
whenever I open a new file. This is not correct. Any help or direction
would be geatly appreciated. Thanks.

I guess this is when you are double-clicking an XLS file.
It indicates that the instructions for opening an XLS file held in the "file
associations" have been corrupted.

One way to fix them is
Start / Run /
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver
