File won't open!

Hello.
I close an excel file, and then when I go to open it again, nothing. Gone.
From within Excel just a slight movement of the mouse, then nothing.
Nor double clicking the file from it's location, Excel opens, but there's no
file, not even a blank new one. And there is no message whatsoever.
Thank GOODNESS I have the original on my memory stick, because it's got many
sheets and tons of data but of course I loose everything I've just done.
It's happened 3 times. The same file.
Can anyone explain and also tell me how I can recover it.
This happened on my laptop, (Vista, Excel 07)
And it happened twice on my computer at work, (XP, Excel2003)

Thank you
Jenny

And if you open excel first, then use ctrl-o to open the file, is it there?

The problem of double clicking on the file in windows explorer is common in
xl2007 with no solution.

Some people have said that if they go into the office button (and show an Open
dialog), then close without opening, the file appears--after double clicking on
the file.

Thank you for your reply.
Nope, not working.
And what's more is that when I tried different things, it was telling me
that the file was open (by me) and could only be read-only. and that still
didn't work. No file open anywhere.

But I did find in Exc07, Open and Repair drop down in the Open dialogue box,
the repair didn't work but it did have an option 'Extract' which has
converted all the formulas to values, which is better than nothing.
But still annoying

Close excel and reboot your pc.

Then open excel and do Office button|Open to open your file.

Does that work?
