FileFormatConverter not working

Hi all,
I have all of a sudden started to have problems with the Microsoft
Word file format converter. I have Word 2003 installed on my Laptop.
Till recently, it used to open the Word 2007 documents alright (by
using the File Format Converter installed on the Laptop), but suddenly
it is not working anymore. Now, when I try to open the 2007 doc by
double-clicking it, it gives a message window "Select the encoding
that makes your document readable" with various options such as
Windows(Default), MSDOS etc available.

I have tried re-installing the converter from the Microsoft website
(Compatibility pack, 27.5 MB), and also from the original CD, but
nothing works.

I recall that this problem started to happen after the Word hanged for
some time while running, with the toolbars going black.

Please help.
Thanks

Also note that there have been at least three updates to the Office 2007
Compatibility pack for Office 2000-2003. So I recommend that you download
and install the current version.

I have a similar problem, but mine started after the latest Microsoft Patch
Tuesday updates (May 5) to Word and the Word Compatibility Pack.

I use both Word 2007 and WordPerfect X3 on my WinXP computer. Generally,
when I want to work on a WordPerfect file in Word, I first convert it to
Word 6.0/7.0 for Windows or to Word 97/2000/2002/2003 for Windows. I've
always been able to open those files in Word 2007.

However, after the Tuesday updates, I've been unable to open these files in
Word. The error message is: "The file is not the right file type,
(WordPerfect 6.x)." Even if I try to open these files as WordPerfect files,
they still won't open. However, if I want to open a WordPerfect file saved
in WordPerfect format, I can specify the WP format in Word and open the
file.

Do I need to remove the latest Word updates from Microsoft--or perhaps just
the Compatibility Pack update?

Thank you!

Jo-Anne
