FileMaker 8 Incompatability?

W

Since installing FileMaker Pro 8.0 version one, I can't open Word 2004.
When I click on Microsoft Word or a Word file icon, a spinning beach
ball and a docked icon labelled "Microsoft Error Reporting" result. To
get Word's beach ball to release the desktop I have to perform a Force
Quit on Word. (Another part of Microsoft Office 2004, Entourage, still
works properly).

Have you heard of an incompatibility between FileMaker 8 and Word 2004?
Any suggestions? Should I go back to FileMaker 7, which worked well
with Word 2004? At present I am shifting to an alternate word processor
(Apple's "Pages", part of iWork) to work around the Word problem.

Thanks,
Walter

I, Personally, haven't heard of an incompatibility with FileMaker Pro 8, and
I can't find anything on the Net complaining about it. It's probably too
new.

I suggest that you try re-naming your Normal Template. If FileMaker adds
anything to that, it may have corrupted it. If that doesn't fix it, run the
Remove Office Tool, then re-install Office.

Even though that's the "Thermonuclear Option", it will probably turn out to
be quicker than trying to track this one down: some file somewhere has
gotten munged, and it's difficult to say which one. Note: Re-installing
without running the Remove Office tool does precisely nothing, so don't try
it.

If you want to be a bit more scientific about it, run down the problem
solving steps here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm

(If you're using Safari, keep re-loading until you get the page, Safari has
a bug...)

If you do follow the trouble-shooting steps, we would appreciate it if you
could report back which one worked :)

Cheers

Your very first recommendation, to rename my Normal Template, worked the
first time. All my Word stuff was suddenly restored and accessible again,
including tables and charts. The Normal Template, which took me a minute to
find, was in Users/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X Identities.

I now think that it was probably not FileMaker Pro 8 which messed up my
Normal Template. Shortly before I installed FileMaker Pro 8 I had been in
Normal Template making permanent changes to some of the styles.

Thanks so much for the rescue, John.
