filemaker pro as data source for pivot table in mac excel?

in looking at threads in this newsgroup, it's unclear to me whether
this can be done.

I've got an application that runs on a pc using ms/access as a data
source for an excel pivot table.

If I convert the access application to filemaker pro, will a pivot
table on mac excel be able to use the filemaker pro data as a data
source?

Even if you could, why bother? The Access table/query can be directly output
as an Excel file with little more than a few clicks - usable on Mac or PC.
Take a look at the Office Links feature in Access.

Is your answer "no" it can't?

I'm working with a database of more than 65,000 records - that's why I
need a pivot table.

Is the Access database accessible to the Mac over a network? If so, I
believe that the pivot table can use it as a data source directly. You'll
need Query which is a standard part of Office 2004 and the appropriate ODBC
database drivers. Search the web, as several options are available.

That wasn't actually a resounding "No", but the last I heard Mac XL & FM Pro
weren't speaking :( , but that depends on FM Pro version. You might check
the FM site for up-to-date info.

In addition to Bob G's input as a viable alternative, can you take advantage
of a CrossTab Query in Access itself? The later versions also offer Pivot
Table View for Queries, Tables & Forms, which may be another option to
explore.

A new client wants to use my application.

The application currently runs on pcs using with excel/access.
They, however are a MAC shop and have pagemaker pro installed
throughout the company. They would strongly prefer not to add
ms/access to their installed programs.

Thus I'm considering re-writing the access application in pagemaker
pro.

Well, they can't add Access even if they wanted to, it is not available on
the Mac. I have no idea how you could rewrite the excel application in
pagemaker, but go ahead and good luck!

I think he means FileMaker Pro - not Pagemaker.

Hi John,

Excel (both Mac and Windows) has a limit of 65,000 rows per worksheet.
You can have unlimited worksheets.

Pivot tables are nice ways to arrange data on worksheets, but the
worksheets each have a 65,000 row limit.

If your application provides result sets that exceed 65,000 rows, then
to make them usable in Excel those results will have to be subdivided in
some way so that they come in batches that don't exceed 65,000 records
on any given worksheet.

Excel for Mac can use SQL queries that are generated in Microsoft Query,
which is supplied with Office 2004 and is included in the standard
install of Office. A custom install may have omitted MS Query, but it
can be easily added if need be.

Microsoft Query uses ODBC drivers provided by 3rd parties to connect to
data sources. A wide variety of data sources can be used. ODBC drivers
are available to sue FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Access as data sources.
