<filename> is not a valid win32 application

My parents (bless their computer illiterate hearts) are
having problems opening works documents with their new
Word 2000. I'm not sure what happened before I called to
tell them to put the office cd in the cd drive so the
converter can load but now whenever they try to open a
document file with a .wps extension (and they have a lot
of them!!!) they get a "<filename> is not a valid win32
application" error messege. Does anybody have a solution?
Thanks for the help!

Jim

Hi Jim,

The Works files with a *.wps extension are the Works spreadsheets and
these can not be opened in Word since they are spreadsheet files.

Nor does Microsoft provide a converter for *.wps files. You would need
to open the files in Works and save them in a format another
application can read, such as an Excel format.

However if all they have is Word and not Office then you may want to
reinstall Works. Word is only a word processor and Word alone is not a
replacement for Works.

Now if they have Office you'll still need to reinstall Works to save
the *.wps files in an Excel format. You could obtain a third-party
utility for this but of course it wouldn't be free:

Hi Jim,

Actually the .wps files are Word processor files and they should open up in Word with no problem. When you get the error
message, is the filename referenced in the errror message the name of the file they are trying to open or is it winword.exe?

Thanks!
