filename you entered was too long

Not a problem with Windows, nor OSX, but only Word on OSX. Why? This is
just silly, I have to manually rename each saved file, even when that file was
originally over 31 characters!

Can anybody help? Will Microsoft fix this?

If the file name was originally over 31 characters, you can open the
file, modify it and save it without a hitch. While the document title
bar will show a hash at the end, it preserves the long file name.

The file handling library that Office v.X uses does limit *new*
filenames to 31 characters. From what I recall, this was a design
decision that had to be made while OSX was still in development and the
long file name libraries were presumably still unstable (recall that
because of the release timing of Office v.X, the Office v.X design
lockdown probably had to occur months before OSX even went to public
beta).

It's fixed in Office 2004.
