files disappearing

I have a problem relating to word files. They are stored in a share on a
microsoft server and worked fine until about a week ago.

The user can access the share folder the file is stored in and sees a
particular .doc word file; as soon as they open that file (mac:eek:ffice x) it
is converted to a word work file L_xxx(number is always diferent). They are
then stuck because if they try and close word it asks do they want to save
the file, they click no and the file is deleted.

Does anyone have a solution; I have found a few articles asking the
same/similar questions but as yet no answers.

Hi Alex:

That's most unusual: How many file server protocols do you have running on
that server? Is it possible that the user's Mac has more than one protocol
addressing that server?

Because Word doesn't "Convert" a file to work file. The original file
should not be going anywhere: the work file is an addition to it which
stores the changes until the user commits the changes with a save.

This could also be an ownership problem. If the file owner is being updated
by the server when the user opens it, it is possible that the user then
can't see it if they are not in the same group as the server.

Sorry: not seen this one before.

Hi Alex!

John has a good idea about "file server protocols". A lot of Mac users
don't realize that they can connect via AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) and
SMB (aka CIFS). AFP is the Mac's native language for file sharing and
SMB is the Windows language for file sharing. Macs are great because
they can do both but each method has its own limitations. Placing a file
on the server via SMB and then later trying to access that file via AFP
can lead to problems and vice versa.

Try this...

Have your user connect to the server first using: "afp://servername" or
"afp://serverIPaddress". How does the file appear this way?

Next, have your user connect to the server using "smb://servername" or
"smb://serverIPaddress". How does it appear now?

You may not necessarily be able to use both of these protocols but if
you can then that's a good indication that the switch between protocols
is your problem. Simply stick to one or the other and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps!
