Files in expired Word 2007 no longer retrievable

A classmate created files using a trial version of Word 2007. The
trial period expired and he says the files he created are no longer
accessible by any means. Is this the case? If so, is there a way
around this without having to purchase the complete edition (poor
student)?

Upon expiration of the trial period, the trial software goes into
"reduced functionality mode", which means the software can be used to
open, view, and print existing Office files, but the software cannot be
used to create new Office files or edit existing Office files.

If the Office 2007 trial software was uninstalled, then free viewers for
Word 2007 and Powerpoint 2007 are available for download from the
Microsoft website.

For Word 2000 and above you could also install the Word 2007 compatibility
pack which adds the fonts and converters necessary to open 2007 documents.
