Files listed as WordPad and convert to Word on opening

I opened a group of files and one looked corrupted or converted, so I tried
to open it in WordPad. Now all Word documents (across several hard drives)
are converted to WordPad recognized files. All of the Word documents are
found via search, but display a WordPad icon and open converting to WordPad

How can I globally change the files back to Word documents.

The files haven't changed. All that changed is which program is assigned to
open .doc files when you click them.

The quickest way to put the assignment back is to reregister Word. In the
Start > Run box, type in

winword /r

and press Enter. (Notice the space before the slash.)

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm.

Jay,

The process ran, but no change. I closed files and re-ran the command, but
the icons have not changed to Word and will not open to Word unless selected
to Open with. Any additional ideas?

Have you tried restarting Windows? This may be necessary to make the
Registry change take effect.

If reregistering Word doesn't fix it select a document in Windows Explorer,
right click and choose 'Open with...'

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to
always open with this application.
