Files no longer retrievable form expired Word 2007 trial version

A classmate created files using a trial version of Word 2007. The
trial period expired and he says the files he created are no longer
accessible by any means. Is this the case? If so, is there a way
around this without having to purchase the complete edition (poor
student)?

Hello,

It depends on the file format he/she saved them in.

If he saved them as .doc files, then you should be able to open them
with MS Word,

However, if he/she used one of the Word-specific formats, then the
best thing is to ask a friend to download the trial version, open the
files and resave them as .doc files.
