Files not opening

I use Word X, and have recently installed it on a computer running Tiger
10.4.2 (and have made recent software updates).

It always used to work fine. But now I can open Word files by Cmd-O and
the file selector, but double-clicking on them (or single-clicking and
Cmd-O) brings up Word but does not open a window with the file.

It's definitely a Word problem, as files belonging to other programs
open fine.

Any ideas as to what is happening, and how to cure it?

2- Log out, then log back in, launch Word and see if the problem persists.
