"Files of type" - missing Excel in '03?

I have posted my problem in both the VBA.General ("Wd97/2k->'03 - Insert
File Problem") and Conversions ("Word'03 - Missing Excel Converter") ng's
but haven't had any response (my apologies to "Word Heretic"- syntax wasn't
the problem).

I'm assuming, therefore, that I'm not being clear enough so I'll try it
here.
Basically it appears as though our Off ProWord '03 (running on XPPro)
doesn't have the Excel converter.
Our syatem Administrator assures me that "All the components are installed"
but what I'm getting does not match the Help screens for the functions
related to bringing a spreadsheet into Word.

In its simplest form; if I scroll through the "Files of Type" dropdown on an
"Open" Excel is not mentioned.
Should it be? or has there been a fundemental change since Wd97 -> '02.

We are currently upgrading from '97 (NT) and this is slowly driving me crazy
because we have a number of VBA apps that rely on the InsertFile function
(OLE is not an option as the apps manipulate the imported table in Word)

In addition to these ng postngs I've Googled high and low but cannot find
any reference to the problem (which may mean I'm missing the boat-not the
1st time).
Any guidance would be appreciated.

You mention both Word 2002 and Word 2003 in your post... do you know
which one you have? Office XP includes an Excel converter for Word on
the CD, but the converter is not installed automatically. Office 2003
does not include an Excel converter for Word, but you may (at your own
risk) install the EXCEL32.CNV file from an older version of Office into
your TextConv folder to restore the previous functionality.

Thanks.
As usual I wasn't too clear.
At work (wd97) and at home (wd2k) the converter is present.
At work we are upgrading to 2003 and in the process I could not find the
converter. I don't know why this was done and am confused as the help
screens in both the user interface and VBA still retain reference to the
ability to convert.
It looks as though I'll have to bit the bullet and re-write my routines
to handle this.

I'd be interested to know why MS would drop the ability to do a
conversion from one of their own products within the Office suite.

Again, thank you.

Microsoft modified the WordPerfect 5.x for DOS converter and eliminated
several other converters to enhance security in Office 2003.

Sounds like a case of "left hand not knowing about the right hand" <g>
Oh well, at least now I know.

Thanks,
