files will not open after 10.1.6 security update for Office X

Hellow,

I've updated office X to version 10.1.6 using the recently developed
security update. I've encountered some problems with files that I had
previously made using powerpoint. Seems as if the updated version of
powerpoint will no longer open some of these files. The exact error
message I receive is as follows:

PowerPoint cannot read HD:Users:reddog:Desktop:235 presentation.ppt.

After uninstalling the 10.1.6 and reinstalling Office up to the 10.1.5
update, everything opened fine. So, I'm guessing this recent update
is the culprit (although I'm sure I could be wrong). Please let me
know if you have any advice on what might be causing this issue and
how to remedie it. For now, I'll stick to the previous version of
Office X.

Sincerely,

Dave O.

Same sort of problem here, only even more weird. After installing the
update and starting Word, I'm asked to provide my name and serial
number (again!). Entering the serial number results in an error
telling me that it is not correct. Careful checking of the number,
re-entering it, re-reading it, re-checking it several times, still
results in the error message. Looks like an uninstall of 10.1.6 and a
re-install of 10.0. What a waste of time and energy (and therefore
also a waste of money).

See response to your previous post.

Sure sounds like you've got a pirated copy of Office v.X.

I have a similar issue...after installing the 10.1.6 update on my TI
667 Mac OSX 10.3.5, I can no longer open word, excel or powerpoint at
all!! It hangs on the splash screen with the message "updating excel
files" uhh what does excel have to do with word or powerpoint?
Entourage opens and works fine(thank god) I did have to force quit on
the install of the update when it hung near the end on...you guessed
it updating excel files(or something to that effect)

So how do I fix this? If I uninstall word am I gonna lose all my
Entourage emails/data? How(and what) do I backup prior to
uninstall/reinstall? And how do I restore all my Entourage data? TIA

If you had to force quit during the upgrade, I'd suggest you use the
Remove Office application (found on the original Install CD in the Value
Pack folder), then reinstall and reapply the updater.

You won't lose any emails - they're stored in the Microsoft User Data
(MUD) folder. The MUD folder is, by default, placed in your
<home>:Documents folder. You don't need to back that up specially (but
you are backing up your HD regularly, right?).

If you've customized Word, you may want to consider backing up the files
identified here:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/BackUpPrefs.htm

(if you use Safari, hit refresh a few times).

If you've customized XL, you may want to consider saving these files, if
they exist (though be careful about adding them back - they may have
been corrupted in the botched update):

~:Library:preferences:Microsoft folder:
com.microsoft.excel.prefs.plist
Excel Toolbars (11)

HD:Applications:Microsoft Office 2004 folder:
Templates:My Templates folder:
<any custom templates>

Office folder:
Add-Ins folder:
<any custom add-ins>
Startup:Excel folder:
Personal Macro Workbook
Workbook
Sheet
<any others that you've added>
