Files with ~$ when saved.

When I save a file in English, saved with a given name, it is saved with ~$
in front of the name. The file is unreadable and appears to be in some
foreign language. I tried reloading Microsoft Office but got same results.

Files with ~$ in front of the names are Word's lock files. One of these is
created for every document you have open. They should be removed
automatically when you close the document.

When you open a word document, files beginning with ~$ are created.
These, and possibly some others depending on default and other settings,
are temporary files that Word creates for its own purposes. When you
quit/exit Word, these temporary files should be deleted automatically. If
you choose File Save for a newly created file, a file name is proposed
based on the first content of the document.

It is usually best to select your own file name by overtyping the
suggestion.

Let us know.

Thanks for the input. I do save the files with my own name for the files. But when I recall the file or look in the file directory, it has the ~$in front of the file name. I need tobe able to convert those files to readable files and find out how to set defaults so that it is not saved as ~$.

Thanks Graham. The lock files are not being removed. How do I modify defaults or whatever to make it happen? I apologize to the Group if I am not supposed to respond to each response but I did respond to another response as well.

Unfortunately the lock files are not editable Word documents. Are you saying
that *only* lock files are created?

This could be evidence of virus related problems, or it could be indicative
of a corrupt template. Shut Word down.

Attend to orphan files

Does starting Word in safe mode (hold the CTRL key whilst starting Word) fix
the problem? If so, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

I trust you are not working from removable media?

Starting Word in the Ctrl Mode did not help. I think what happened to cause those files to be saved as ~$ (whatever that means) was caused by me not recognizing that in the "Save As Type" was the words "Document Template". So every file that was saved since that "Save As Type" was a Document Template has the ~$ in front of the file name. I do beleive that this occurred on some of the files already in my file (though I cannot be sure). Graham, I believe that you said the files are not editable. Does that mean there is no way to translate these files to a readable form understanding now that they were caused by being saved as a Document Template?

If you have saved the docs as templates, they will have been saved to Word's
user templates folder. Instead of opening them (if you open a template, it
must be saed as a template), you will have to create a new document based on
each one, then delete the template.

I am not sure how to locate the user templates folder. I did go to a
location where there were various templates but they all looked normal with
no garbled language. Suzanne mentioned that I should create a new document
based on each template. But How do I create a new document when I can not
read the old document. I know I am a little dumb on the use of computer
terminology but I would appreciate it if someone can break it down for me.

The templates are saved in the folder specified for user templates on the
File Locations tab of Tools | Options. To create a new document you use File
| New to navigate to the New dialog. Double-click on one of the "templates"
to create a new blank document and then save it (as a .doc) in the desired
document folder with the intended file name.
