Hi folks,

A friend has a problem with his laptop (using XP and Office 2003).

He has noticed that for a lot of his Word files there is a similar file with
a ~ sign in front. The file's are all 1kb.

I thought these were temporary files that Word generated when a file was
open, but even though he's exiting Word cleanly he's getting lots of these
files left behind.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Rat,

Yes, it's somewhat common. Word has never been good at cleaning up after itself when there are problems and it doesn't go back and
do it later either :)

You'll find many of the files using Start=>Search and looking for this file name string

~$*.*;*.tmp

and sending them off to the recycle center.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 for an explanation of
temp files, and http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm
for cleanup instructions.

As for why they're left behind, nobody knows.

Does it happen for others? i.e. is it not uncommon to see these files left
behind? >>

Thanks Bob, that's reassuring. At least I know there's not a problem with
the system, and Word is behaving "normally" :)
